studio artists
Our Studio Artists Project is the company's newest way of supporting and cultivating professional artists in our communities. This new residency project embraces our ever current involvement with excellence, innovation, and excitement. And offers a new level for emerging artists to aspire; as the residencies inherently give the selected artists time and resources for long-term/protracted development of ideas, new & old material, and even new disciplines.
In each residency period the company invites 2-3 artists from different disciplines to add their creative verve to the mix of our regular events and happenings. These seasoned artists [already working for at least 7-10 years] are contracted as company affiliates from September to August. Our Studio Artists create work which they share in different forums and events, they engage audiences and other participants onsite on a regular basis [including facilitating workshops and mentoring newer artists in our rAiz'n the sun Programs; and will all be presenting and curating programs in the annual rps festivals!
Our first set of Studio Artists are filmmaker, performer, and storyteller Nicole Brooks; groundbreaking visual artist, Le'vi Lingwabo originally from Zambia; and contemporary singer/songwriter & recent import to Canada, Rehaset Yohanes.
See Levi Lingwabo's stunning artwork at BAM! on Saturday, July 24th @ Artscape Wychwood Barns; plus experience one of our voice workshops with Nicole Brooks in an Open Studio/#251: noon-4pm. View the full event line-up at wix.com/bamtoronto.
playwright in residence
Each season we host a residency for a playwright working on a new script. We support the playwright in getting funds so time can be dedicated to writing and workshopping a new play. We try to commission the playwright's new work by providing an additional commission fee, workshop time with actors and creative team, showcasing of the work while in development, and produce a first mounting on a main stage or as a school tour.
Our playwright-in-residence for 2009-10 is Joan Kivanda developing her play, Virgin. Our last residency hosted Rebecca Fisseha from 2006-2008, during which time she developed Wise.Woman, produced in Feb/March 2009 at the Theatre Centre and slated for remounting in 2011.
